The NESTA (National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association) Personal Trainer Certification is valid for 4 years and not only 2 or 3 years as with most of the other organizations.
Some argue that re-certification only every 4 years COULD mean that trainers with NESTA certification are not as up-to-date on the newest science as others…
Let’s dig deeper and have a look at the details of the NESTA Certification.
The NESTA Personal Trainer Certification (CPT):

How Much Does The NESTA Certification Cost?
The certification itself will set you back for about $449, but NESTA will try to up sell you in their online shopping cart with additional programs and certifications like the “Heart Rate Performance Specialist program” including a heart rate monitor…
Note of the author: (IMHO things like this are a useless up sell that won’t help you or your clients in real life)

The exam itself consists of 125 questions, proctored multiple choice, and an 2-hour time-limit. The 90-day time-frame for taking the exam can be extended for $95 and fees for recertification are tiered as follows:
- Recertification Fee: $149 (between 90-1 day(s) prior to expiration)
- Late Application Fee: $25 (between 1-30 days late)
- $50 (between 31-60 days late)
- $95 (between 61-90 days late)
Conclusion:
The NESTA Personal Trainer Certification is NCCA accredited that is definitely a plus and will help you finding a job, although the recognition of NESTA in gyms and health clubs is by far not as good as NASM or NSCA. My personal feelings towards the NESTA certification is that the program is not as comprehensive as it should be and PT’s would be better off with NASM, NSCA or ASCM. By no means is NESTA one of the “bad apples” though, in the end most of what it takes to become a really good trainer is learned by experience and getting a job also depends of each individual…
